How to use the password generator

  1. Set the length. Use 16 characters or more for important accounts.
  2. Choose which characters to include.
  3. Copy the password, or press New password for another one.

How the passwords are made

Each character is picked at random from the set you choose, using your browser’s secure random number generator. Look-alike characters such as 0, O, 1, l and I are left out, which makes passwords easier to read and type. Passwords are never sent to us, saved or logged, and they disappear when you leave the page.

How strong is a password?

The result shows the entropy in bits, a measure of how many possible passwords the settings allow. A 16-character password with letters, numbers and symbols has roughly 100 bits. Each extra character multiplies the number of possibilities, so length matters more than complexity. The estimate assumes every character is random, so do not edit a generated password by hand.

Example: a 16-character password using letters, numbers and symbols has 80 characters to choose from. That gives about 100 bits of randomness.

Good habits with passwords

  • Use a different password for every account, so one leak does not expose the others.
  • Store passwords in a password manager, which can also generate them for you.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication for email and banking accounts.
  • Do not paste passwords into sites you do not trust.

Questions about the password generator

Is it safe to generate passwords here?

The generator runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us. For accounts that matter, a password manager is still the easiest way to create and store a unique password for each one.

How long should a password be?

At least 12 characters, and 16 or more for important accounts. Longer is better when the site allows it.

Why are some characters missing?

Look-alike characters (0, O, 1, l and I) are excluded so that passwords are easier to read correctly when you type them.
