How to use the salary converter

  1. Choose the figure you know: an hourly rate, a monthly payment or an annual salary.
  2. Enter the amount.
  3. Adjust hours per week and weeks per year to match your contract. The defaults are 40 hours and 52 weeks.

The results show the annual, weekly, monthly and hourly figures together, so you can compare offers in whichever form they are quoted.

How the conversion works

The annual salary is the hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year. The weekly figure is the annual salary ÷ weeks per year, the monthly figure is the annual salary ÷ 12, and the hourly figure is the annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year).

Example: $25 an hour for 40 hours a week and 52 weeks. That is $52,000 a year, which is $1,000 a week and about $4,333 a month.

Gross pay, before tax

All figures are gross, meaning before income tax, social security contributions and other deductions. Your take-home pay will be lower. Overtime and bonuses are not included unless you add them to the amount you enter.

Adjusting for part-time work and leave

If you work fewer hours, reduce hours per week. If you are paid for fewer weeks, for example in a seasonal job or with unpaid leave, reduce weeks per year. The hourly rate stays the same, so the annual figure falls in proportion.

Questions about salary

What if I work 37.5 hours a week?

Enter 37.5 in hours per week. The calculator uses that figure for all the conversions.

Is this gross or net pay?

Gross. The calculator does not apply tax or deductions. Check your payslip or a tax calculator for your take-home pay.

Why does the default use 52 weeks?

52 weeks is the usual basis for a full-year salaried job. If you are paid for fewer weeks, enter the number of paid weeks.
