How to use the tip calculator

  1. Enter the bill before the tip.
  2. Enter the tip percentage, or tap 15%, 18% or 20%.
  3. Enter how many people are paying. Each share is shown next to the total.

How the numbers are calculated

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip. Each person’s share is the total divided by the number of people.

Example: a bill of $86.40 with an 18% tip, split three ways. The tip is $15.55 (86.40 × 0.18 = 15.552). The total is $101.95, so each person pays about $33.98.

How much to tip

Tipping customs differ by country and by type of service. In the United States, 15% is common for standard table service, and 18% to 20% is usual for good service. Some places add a service charge automatically, so read the bill before adding a tip. In many countries a tip is not expected at all.

Splitting a bill unevenly

The calculator splits the total equally. If one person ordered much less, work out their share separately: take the cost of their food and drinks and add the same tip percentage to it. Split the rest of the bill among everyone else, with the same percentage added.

Questions about tipping

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Both are common. Many people tip on the amount before tax, and some tip on the total. The calculator works with whatever figure you enter, so use the amount you want the percentage to apply to.

Is 15% enough?

It depends on the place and the service. 15% is a common starting point for a standard meal in the United States. In many countries tips are optional, so follow local custom.

Does rounding matter?

Each share is shown to the cent. If you want to make the payment simpler, round up to a convenient amount. The difference is small.
